Message engineering and structural engineering. We engineer everything and say we designed it. Regardless, someone should be able to show that the product will resist the required forces.

You might ask, "what about a washer used in the typical way" and you have a point. Not a lot of engineering required. On the other had, make that washer 1" thick and try to roll it over with shear force and it needs to be looked at. Now you are trying to deform the aluminum and pry the bolt out when the original condition was simply shear. And you are doing this thousands of times. And your life may depend on it.
